How To Transform An Old T-Shirt Into A Headband

As a teenage girl, over the years you've likely collected multiple T-shirts from sporting events, volunteering opportunities, community programs, and so on. Yet your once beloved tee has been reduced to a holey and torn garment. Fortunately, you can still convert this T-shirt into a cute and stylish headband in a variety of ways.

Thick Band with Ornament

This first approach is very simple. All you require is an old T-shirt, scissors, and a hot glue gun or thread and a needle.

Cut out a wide strip of the T-shirt and wrap it around your head to determine how long it should be. Then cut the fabric accordingly and glue/sew the edges together. You may also wish to hem the sides of the fabric for a cleaner, less jagged look.

Next, find or make an ornament like a flower or bow to attach to the headband. Glue or sew this piece to the headband. And now it's out with the old and in with the new.

Thin Woven Band

Another trend is a headband that's woven together like a braid. Yet skip your trip to the mall and follow these steps instead. You'll require just the shirt along with tape and scissors.

First, cut a part of the shirt widthwise into a few thin strips of an equal length. Pick the amount of strips depending on what sort of weave you wish to do; three is all that's needed for a simple braid. Then cut each strip so that it forms a long line rather than a circle.

Now line up the pieces and tape them together at the top. Then proceed to weave these parts together. Keep weaving until you've reached the desired length to go around your head. Then tie up the woven band and snip the excess on the tail.

Twisted Band

Another fashion-forward idea is a band consisting of two parts that cross at the front. You'll need the tee, scissors, measuring tape, and a needle and thread.

Starting off, you should measure your head to get an idea of how wide you want the band to be. Double this amount and cut two strips in that length. Form tube-like pieces by folding each strip over length-wise and sewing the two edges together before turning them inside out.

Now form a cross with the two strips. Fold each strip at the center to get that criss-cross look. Sew all the ends together and cut out the hanging part on the tail.

Any half-preserved T-shirt has potential if you follow these tips. Now you can still treasure that old tee even if it is in a different form.
