Paying Attention To The Printed Page

5 Factors That Influence Product Packaging Design

Product design doesn't stop when the item is perfected. You must also design the perfect packaging to broaden the product's appeal. Design is key when ordering custom packaging.

1. Brand Consistency

Consistency across all of your related product lines means your customers can both find their favorite products and discover new ones they also like. Your packaging should reflect your standard brand language in style, logos, font, and basic design. Custom packaging ensures that it is all developed to reliably meet your brand vision, whether your customer is interacting online or in a retail shop.

2. Sense Engagement

Engaging the senses helps create a product memory for customers, which can encourage them to continue to choose your items. There are more senses than sight to interact with. Texture is an important one in packaging. Texturing, for example, can make an item stand out and encourage customers to touch and pick it up. Using a variety of materials in packaging can also make it more engaging.

3. Color Impacts

There is a psychology to color, with some colors thought to increase certain feelings and responses in humans. Cool colors, like pale blue, can soothe, while bright colors, like red, can excite. It pays to learn a bit about the colors that are most likely to complement your product line so you can incorporate them into your packaging design. You will also want to avoid any colors that may have a negative connotation in relation to your product.

4. Demographic Influences

Packaging needs to be tailored to your demographic or they will move on to something that better reflects their value or needs. If you sell eco-friendly products, then your packaging needs to be either reusable or easily recyclable. For products aimed at senior users, easy-to-open packaging may be more appealing. Always try to anticipate the needs of your demographic during the design process.

5. Shelf Awareness

Standing out on the shelf is a balance between two extremes. Look too much like the competition and you are overlooked, but stand out too much and you may not be instantly recognizable. The key is subtlety. For example, you may stick to the same style of packaging that is the de facto industry standard, but you may make the packaging slightly larger or of higher-end materials so that you are more likely to pique a customer's interest.
